How to Test a Domain Name Before You Buy It

The best domain tests are behavioral: can real people hear it, remember it, spell it and understand the brand without coaching?

Spoken recall test

Say the name once without showing it. Ask the listener to repeat and spell the domain.

Delayed memory test

Return to the listener later and ask what the name was. This exposes names that feel clever but do not stick.

Lowercase visual test

Write the full domain in lowercase to catch accidental word combinations and visual ambiguity.

Email test

Place the domain after a realistic employee name and read the email address aloud.

Expectation test

Ask what kind of company or product the listener expects from the name. Large mismatch can signal positioning friction.

Compare finalists blind

Test several names without revealing your favorite. Founder enthusiasm can otherwise bias the feedback.
