Domain Name Checklist: 20 Checks Before You Buy

Use this checklist after you have a shortlist but before money changes hands. It catches practical problems that naming enthusiasm tends to hide.

Brand fit

Does it match the audience? Does it support the positioning? Can the company grow without the name becoming misleading? Is it distinct from direct competitors?

Would you be comfortable saying it in every sales call for five years?

Language

Can a new listener pronounce it? Can they spell it after hearing it once? Does lowercase create accidental words? Does it carry unwanted meanings in important markets?

Is the name still clear over a noisy phone call?

Extension

Does the extension fit the audience? Will users mistakenly default to another extension? Are renewal terms understood? Are important defensive variants worth considering?

Test the full domain, not the root in isolation.

Risk

Search for trademarks and confusingly similar companies. Check social identities and app stores where relevant. For high-stakes acquisitions, consider professional legal review.

Domain ownership is not trademark clearance.

Transaction

Is the seller/listing legitimate? Do you understand fixed-price, offer, auction or lease terms? Is the total cost within budget? Is the transfer method clear?

Set a walk-away number before negotiating.

Launch

Confirm who will control the registrar account, enable strong account security, record renewal dates, connect email carefully and keep transaction documents.

A good purchase ends with operational control, not checkout.
